I grew up with such a father, and my sister is exactly alike with my two nieces. Yes, in many ways I am grateful for the discipline and my curiousity and my intellect. Today i am an independent professional. After I was independent I stopped talking to my father for over 15 years. I did not miss him because he did not contribute to my life emotionally. I hated the he was home, and the pressure to suceed. Only in the last year, my dad is in his mid-70's, have I learned to communicate with him.

My sister is a carbon copy of my father. On quiet evenings, when i have my nieces to myself, they talk about the loneliness and the envy of their friend's relationship with their parents. My nieces have strong relationship with their mother. They know their mother loves them and would sacrifice everything for them. The girls also live under the pressure of guilt of unperforming and in a emotional vacumm where they cannot be totally open about being "silly" with their mother. There is no room for "silly" in my sister household. Everything is orderly and planned, even vacations.

Results for the Major competency texts were released in Malaysia recently. There were young ladies hiding underneath the big storm drains, crying their eyes out, because they had a A-. They were afraid of what their mother would say. The thought of dissapointing their mother was not on the foreground of their minds, they were afraid of the cruel words that would spill forth from their mothers' lips. It is a 2-edged sword.

Somewhere there is a balanced between pushing a child towards sucess and letting a child explore the wonders of growing up.
