I'd rather be brought up by Bill Gates's mom!

Being raised by a super strict "Chinese" Mom and lived more than half of my life in US, I totally understand this article. Although I am no in the Bill Gates level of success, but I haven't really failed at any major goals in life and I am happy. I am a professional and I enjoy my time doing extreme sports @ the beach frequently. First of all, let me start out by saying that nothing in the world is perfect. "Western" and "Chinese" method as described in this article all have advantages and disadvantages. Second, there are always exceptions to methods, depending on the kids. Yes, it is true that in real life, once you get to a certain level, innovation and your social skills will get you further. However, to get to that level, you will need to have good grades in elementary, middle, high school, following college and grad school. There are million of kids, it is just a fact of life that you need attributes that are quantifiable. The result? Not hard to imagine. You have higher probability of success to be "good" success level but less probability of being in the "great" success level if you follow the "Chinese" method. If you look @ statistics based on averages, the "Chinese" method always stand out. If you look @ statistics based on "great" achievements, most of them are owned by Westerners. For example, Asians have the highest average salary in US but they do not have the highest salaries. To be great @ something, you need to love it. It's difficult to love something if you are being told to do it. Conversely, if you follow the "Western" method, you have a few that will be great but majority will fail @ what they do. Which one is better? You will just have to judge yourself. However, I will ask that people shouldn't really be so judgemental to this article. Chinese endured thousands of years. Whether they know it or not, much of their culture is closed tied to survival. Having a higher probability to do well and endure is very different than trying to do what you love and be great at it. When you honestly believe that having good grades is the key to do well and endure, you are less likely to worry about calling them "fatties".
