I believe people are picking up too much on the "Chinese Mother" headline and not what the author is saying. If you read the article, she speaks about Irish, or even Americans raising their kids the same way, she doesn't say it is ONLY the Chinese that invented or use this approach, just that she calls it the Chinese Way...

While many people have pointed out that the fortune 500 companies and blah blah blah are in the West, what will happen in the next 10 or 20 years? Take a look at all the best schools in the US and they are now filled with "Chinese Kids", whose parents pushed them to be the best and didn't coddle them.

The US Model has changed so dramatically since I was a kid (and I am only in my 30s) that in 10 or 20 years, there will be serious problems with the competitiveness of the US. Anyplace where kids are coddled, and taught not to keep score and everyone wins, will face harsh realities when they are in competition with those that taught their kids that winning is the most important thing.
