A: During the 2003-2004 academic year, 531 international students from more than 60 countries studied at Xxx. 149 of these students were undergraduates and 382 were graduate students.

Q: What are the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) requirements?
A: The Admissions Committee recommends a TOEFL score of 230 or above for the computer-based test or 570 or above for the paper-based test. The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) is also acceptable. A score of 7 or higher is preferred. Although we do not require students with an SAT I Verbal score of 570 or higher to submit TOEFL test results, we STRONGLY recommend that all students whose first language is not English to take this exam.

Academically strong students whose TOEFL scores are in the 200 to 230 range for the computer-based test or the 540 to 570 range for the paper-based test may be considered for admission on a conditional basis depending on other test scores and intended major. Conditional admission entails successful completion of the seven week intensive English as a Second Language program (STEP/UP), which can be found at the STEP/UP home page.

Q: Does Xxx offer financial aid for international students?
A: During the 2003-2004 academic year Xxx provided more than $900,000.00 in university-funded grants and scholarships to international students. 25% of our undergraduate international students receive financial aid awards. The average financial aid award is approximately $26,683.00. The financial aid awards ranged from $1,987.00 to $36,520.00. Our financial aid is typically awarded in "package" form, which includes some combination of grants and scholarships, loans and campus employment.

Competition for international student financial aid is keen. Last year, only 15 students were offered financial aid packages out of the more than 300 admissible applicants requesting financial aid. You are strongly encouraged to explore other sources of scholarship and financial aid.

The decisions regarding the number of scholarships and the amount awarded to international students are based on the information students provide in their admissions application and ISFAA, and are made in the context of the entire applicant pool. It is not possible for us to give students an assessment of whether or not they will receive financial aid or how much they would receive without an application and ISFAA to review.
