Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds

在澳洲乐队The Birthday Party 1983年解散之后,Nick Cave 决定组建一只伴奏乐队THE BAD SEEDS,开始单飞。乐队的成员变动频繁,先后有Mick Harvey(原The Birthday Party乐手,能演奏多种乐器),Blixa Bargeld(吉他手,同时也是德国八十年代著名的工业噪音EINSTURZENDE NEUBAUTEN 的灵魂人物),后来Barry Adamson(贝斯/吉他,原MAGAZINE乐队),Hugo Race(鼓手), Anita Lane(合成器) ,Thomas Wydler(鼓手,1986年后加入,地下音乐), Kid Congo Powers(1986年以后加入,前CRAMPS/GUN CLUB乐队成员),Conway(钢琴,1992年后)。乐队创造了一种异乎寻常的野蛮和凄美的音乐,中和了布鲁斯、民谣、歌剧和艺术摇滚等音乐风格。

Nick Cave and The Bad Seeds 1984年发行首张单曲 IN THE GHETTO (在犹太区),其后又相继翻唱了Leonard Cohen 的 AVALANCHE ,Bob Dylan 的 WANTED MAN。1986发行了名为 KICKING AGAINST THE PRICKS(踢小弟弟)的翻唱专辑,其中将BY THE TIME I GET TO PHOENIXD 无趣的版本改编成关于爱和失去的焦虑沉重的史诗。

1986年 NICK CAVE 在 YOUR FUNERAL ... MY TRIAL(你的葬礼,我的审判)表现出了他关于[旧约]的不肯妥协的强硬的意识形态:人们天生注定是好是坏,难以改变。很明显,NICK CAVE 乐队的名称来自于 WILLIAM MARCH 的小说《THE BAD SEED》,内容描述一个内心阴暗堕落的年轻女子变成一个杀人凶手的过程。

NICK CAVE 的作品不可避免的基于这些“坏”的精神:酗酒、妓女,贫穷白人的后裔(WHITE TRASH),特别是谋杀这个主题贯穿于他的作品之中。最经典的NICK式英雄是TENDER PREY(1988)专辑里面的 THE MERCY SEAT的主角,暴力粗野,在其虚张声势的外表下隐藏着脆弱的内心 —— 这是NICK最好的8分钟,歌曲内容描述一个杀人犯临刑前的最后时刻:“我渴望着 / 在所有真理的审判下被干掉 / 以牙还牙 / 以眼还眼 / 我老实告诉你 / 我一点儿都不怕死”。

NICK CAVE 被指称“厌恶女人”,实际在他的几首作品(翻唱或原作)也多有表现谋杀女人的主题(包括“HEY JOE”,“LONG TIME MAN”,“I'M GONNA KILL THAT WOMAN”)。不过他最好的几个作品也有关于爱情的主题,比如“STRAIGHT TO YOU”,“THE SHIP SONG”等。1994年的专辑更是名为“LET LOVE IN”(让爱情进来),完美的哥特式情歌,关于婚姻和父爱。NICK 将这张专辑献给他那时刚分手的前妻,一些对过往共同生活的点滴回忆,留恋和歉意。

但是NICK CAVE的歌迷无疑更喜爱1996年的“MURDER BALLADS”(谋杀歌谣),10首关于暴力杀人的故事,如同一幕幕人间惨剧,刻化出一个个扭曲的灵魂:因爱生妒而杀人,因爱而狂乱杀人,大屠杀……钢琴主奏,阴暗恐怖。由 SHANE MacGowan, Polly Harvey, Kylie Minogue 伴唱,尤其是后者,两人对唱 WHERE THE WILD ROSES GROW (野玫瑰生长的地方), 表现了一个女孩被用石头砸死后推进河里的谋杀事件,Kylie Minogue 纤美的歌声与NICK CAVE 皈依的中音形成强烈的反差,优美无比。。改编自BOB DYLAN 的 DEATH IS NOT THE END 由众人合唱,恐怖已极。Song Of Joy (欢乐颂)讲述了某人的家人在他外出时在床上被害的故事,他讲到一个善良的陌生人给他提供住处,表露出这个人可能涉及了谋杀:“你当我是朋友吗 / 对我而言太阳是黑的 / 静得象月亮 / 你有空屋子吗 / 你想让我进去吗”…… NICK CAVE 因此专辑被MTV音乐奖评为最佳男歌手,但他婉拒。他说:我不想与别人竞争,因为艺术是很个人化的……

NICK CAVE 在38岁的时候还参与了电影《WINGS OF DESIRE》 (欲望之翼,导演WIM WENDERS是他的忠实歌迷)和《GHOSTS OF THE CIVIL DEAD》。1989年出版了福克纳风格的 AND THE ASS SAW THE ANGEL。

1997年发行 The Boatman's Call (船夫的呼叫)是Murder Ballads的姊妹篇。

2001年4月发行专辑:《No More Shall We Part》 (我们将不再分离,发行公司:Warner Bros. Records)。上图为专辑封面。

NICK CAVE 被称为“黑暗王子”、“哥特之王”,听他的唱片,好象是沉溺于痛苦与惶恐之中,不安及黑然的气氛象象一把刀刺中你,令你沉浸而不能自拔。NICK CAVE 不只是一个歌手,他的外形、演绎方式,作品里的世界,配合得如此完整,他的唱片封面上,都是一副孤傲表情。

附录(1)The Birthday Party 乐队 (生日聚会乐队)

4AD公司发掘的一支澳洲后朋克地下乐队(UNDERGROUND POST-PUNK),由Nick Cave、Rowland Howard、Mick Harvey 等五名成员组成。1981年,The Birthday Party在4AD旗下推出首张专辑唱片《Prayers On Fire》(失火的祈祷)。The Birthday Party的音乐给人以激烈、孤高的感觉。Nick Cave的演唱粗野、神秘,Rowland Howard的吉他狂乱、夸张。他们被认为是Post Punk的分支Hard Core Punk的主要代表。

乐队在音乐中所表现出的那种黑暗、诡异的力量使他们游离于同时期的英式后朋克乐队,具有了他们自己独特的审美原则。专辑“ The birthday Party:Live 81-82” (4AD)记录了乐队鼎盛时期的现场精选。我们可以感受到乐队在现场所表现出的朋克野性。the birthday party乐队的根源来自粗糙的车库朋克。当然,很多人更愿意说他们具有浓重的哥特气质。可以这样来形容乐队的音乐风格:诡异错乱的鼓点,极度扭曲的吉他噪音,犹如雷鸣般的贝斯重复段落,和精神分裂式的诗歌兽性大发作。总之,我们很难用一种风格来描述乐队。但当乐队奏起第一个音符时,你就能断定这是出自the birthday party的。

与德国的Neubauten相似,乐队的音乐带有很大的即兴成分。当然这并不影响乐队音乐一层推一层的内在结构。可以说,节奏上的转机与单调重复的贝丝线是乐队创作的基点。但不只于此,乐队的音乐中还吸收了爵士乐的即兴段落以增加音乐的不谐和感和紧张度。Nick Cave显然是乐队的灵魂人物。他用一种与观众对抗的方式将黑暗诗歌的语言力量回归到本能的朋克咆哮。可以说,乐队的音乐基本上是Nick Cave彻底释放的载体。本碟最后是乐队翻唱the stooges的fun house。从中我们可以感受到乐队最原始的力量。(Written by Germs)
