Dear Mr. Parsons,

I am writing to you to protest the lack of professionalism demonstrated by CNN and Jack Cafferty in reporting the Olympic Torch Relay recently. The lack of professionalism was disappointing and heartbreaking for many immigrants from China like me.

Thirteen years ago when I was first being admitted into the U.S. by a border control officer, I said “thank you” to him and he replied “you are welcome”. I thought American people were so friendly and they welcomed me to their country. Today, thirteen years later, my belief is even stronger. Through the years, I have met and worked with many, many friendly and open-mind persons, who I believe represent the mainstream of American. I have become to love this country and felt that I am truly one of them, although I miss my hometown in China.

I am, however, deeply saddened by the biased reporting on the Olympic torch replay from CNN. The Olympic torch replay is supposed to be an activity to promote peace and sportsmanship around the globe. The torch relay took place in San Francisco, the only stop in the U.S., on April 9, 2008. Although I am disgusted by the violent attempts to disrupt the torch relay (Is it ironic that disrupting a torch bearer’s right to carry the torch with violence and hurting billions of Chinese’s pride is to demonstrate so-called “higher standard” of human rights?), I am even more disgusted by the biased reporting from CNN. There were thousands of pro-China supporters, as well as some protesters, along the torch relay route. My heart went with the pro-China supporters, although I respected the protesters as long as they did not attempt to interrupt the relay with violence.

I was watching CNN. The title for this even was Torch Protest to begin with, completely ignoring the fact that there were a larger group of supporters in presence. Throughout the live broadcast, CNN gave disproportionately few shots to the supporters but many to the protesters, leaving an impression to the viewers that the activity was only protested but not supported. And then, Jack Cafferty’s comments topped them all. I feel ashamed for him to repeat what he said and for CNN to let him say these words publicly. I have been a loyal CNN viewer and a loyal Time and Fortune subscriber for years. The biased reporting from CNN, especially Jack Cafferty’s comments, broke my heart as I realize that “friendly” impression I had from “you are welcome” thirteen years ago does not always apply. As a mainstream media and a news commentator, I believe CNN and Jack Cafferty showed inadequate professionalism but adequate ignorance. I felt sorry for myself being a long time CNN viewer.

As a long time customer to Time Warner, I do want to bring this to your attention so that some corrective actions can be taken place. Until then, I have decided to unsubscribe Time and Fortune and stop watching CNN.
