I'm afraid

you're overshooting in the department of design style. if you're buying an old house, your options are much limited, with higher priorities given to location, then price range, then house condition, individual floor plan, etc. in the northeastern area, you're most likely going to see colonial style. this is the most marketable style across the area due to popularity. so you can be better assured of its resale value. any other styles are fine, if you're lucky enough to run into them and they also happen to fit into your other needs. avoid anything contemporary, they're often unique so people either like them or hate them, not necessarily a good thing unless resale is not a concern. avoid houses more than 25-years old due to lead-paint used in older houses which is unhealthy. exterior wood panels are an expensive item to repair or replace, so are roofs. so newer roofs and vinyl panels are generally more preferable. stucco and brick sides are gorgeous but much more expensive. the house better be structural sound, which you'll be able to tell once you liked other aspects of it and do the inspection. always use an independent inspector, not the ones referred by your realtor. other than location, the next most important factor is floor plan. you can change other things much more easily, paint, deco, hardwood floor, etc, but change of floor plan is a big hassle if feasible at all. make sure the plan is open enough and flows naturally for your daily activity. budge 2% of your house value for annual maintenance, buy a lot of tools, have fun DIY, be a handyman, not necessarily save you much money, but that's part of home ownership experience.
