Ford revives $5-a-day lease for Mustang
DETROIT -- Ford Motor Co. on Tuesday said it was reviving a $5-a-day lease offer on base versions of its Ford Mustang coupe, as Detroit automakers raise incentives in a year-end sales push.
Ford offered the same deal earlier this year on its Mustang and Ford Ranger pickup as a tie-in with its centennial, recalling company founder Henry Ford's decision to raise his factory workers' wages to $5 a day.
Ford, General Motors and the Chrysler group have tweaked their rebates, no-interest loans and other incentives over the past few weeks to boost year-end sales.
But none so far have raised incentives as quickly as they did in years past when GM went all-out in year-end efforts to grow its market share, forcing Ford and Chrysler to respond. GM executives have said that, although a third straight year of market share gains was unlikely in 2003, they were satisfied with their performance this year.
