Toyota Motor Corp. faces a U.S. safety investigation and potential recall of more than 1 million of its best-selling Camry cars and Lexus ES 300 sedans because of reports of unexpected acceleration that caused 30 crashes.

The action involves 2002 and 2003 Camry, Camry Solara and ES 300 cars, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration said on its Web site.

The agency also began an inquiry into 56 reports that power sliding doors on 761,000 of Ford Motor Co.'s 1999 to 2002 Windstar minivans may open when the vehicles are moving.

Both actions are preliminary evaluations, which the Washington-based agency either closes without further investigation or upgrades to an engineering analysis. The initial investigations are upgraded in 26 percent of cases, and about seven of 10 that reach the second step result in a recall.

The investigation of Toyota's Camry, the top-selling car in the United States for the past two years, and its Lexus ES 300 will look into whether an electronic throttle control system might cause unwanted acceleration, NHTSA said. The accidents reported resulted in five injuries, including one in which a pedestrian was seriously hurt, the agency said.

Toyota, the largest Japanese automaker, didn't immediately respond to a call seeking comment. The Toyota City, Japan-based company has its U.S. sales headquarters in Torrance, Calif.

Ford, the second-biggest U.S. automaker, has sent multiple service advisories to dealers about Windstar sliding doors that may come open or not latch fully, the agency said.

Ford is cooperating with NHTSA, company spokesman Glenn Ray said in a e-mailed statement. "We are in the investigation stage, and it would be premature at this time to speculate on the outcome."

The U.S. agency also upgraded an investigation of seat-belt latches on 262,636 of Kia Motors Corp.'s 1990 and 2000 Sephia cars and Sportage sport-utility vehicles and 2000 Spectra sedans.

NHTSA began the investigation in October, saying it would review its recall in 2002 of earlier models of the Sephia and Sportage. The agency reported 1,495 warranty claims, 35 crashes and 36 injuries related to the current investigation.

The South Korean automaker's "internal investigation and analysis indicates that the scope of the original recall was appropriate," said Rose Krupp, a spokeswoman for Kia's U.S. unit. Kia Motors America is cooperating with the agency and will provide "all necessary information," she said.
